  • The Whims of the Astral Cat

Once the PCs become trapped in their shared dreamscape, begin a progress countdown with a value of 3x the number of PCs. The countdown only advances for action rolls made while participating in the Astral Cat's games. When the countdown triggers, the Astral Cat is satisfied and leaves the PCs' dreams, allowing them to wake. Each PC then gains 1d4 Hope.

The Astral Cat presents a puzzle or game within the dream for the PCs to solve or play. Examples:

    • The PCs are transported to a place where at least one of them has been before but something has changed. They must discover what that is and change it back.

    • The PCs are all put in a scenario where they all face one PC's specific fear. That PC must be the one to overcome it in order to move forward.

If the PCs refuse to participate in the Astral Cat's games, or try to complete it in a way the Astral Cat doesn't like, or the Astral Cat gets bored, spend a Fear to summon a number of tier 1 adversaries equal to the number of PCs. Once they are all defeated, advance the countdown by 1.

About this environment

Made for week 34 of Azu the Bard’s weekly homebrew challenge.

The mystical Astral Cat has decided the PCs dreams are cozy and is going to stay a while, trapping them in a shared dream where they must complete challenges for the Cat’s amusement. Is the Astral Cat trying to teach them a lesson or universal truth? Or perhaps help them overcome a fear or face a buried trauma? Or maybe they’re just a cosmic shit-disturber itching for a little chaos? You decide!
