Adversary overview

A massive, otherwordly, manifestation of all wrongdoings of mortalkind.

The Epitome of Sin manifests into the world as a writhing convergence of every dark impulse ever birthed by mortal hearts. Its form defies reason, a vast and shifting silhouette stitched together from the wrongful thoughts and acts that exist within mortals. Faces bloom and wither across its surface – screaming, pleading, laughing – each a reflection of a mortal sin committed somewhere in the realms. While this being has no eyes, one can feel its gaze: a gaze that does not stare at you but through you, laying bare every secret you’ve ever buried. The being cannot speak for itself but understands all, conveying its urges through emotion: pride swelling in your chest, wrath igniting your veins, envy curdling your thoughts.

The ground trembles not from its weight, but from the sheer gravity of its existence, for this is no beast, no god. It is the culmination of every sin ever whispered into being, and it remembers every one of them by name.

Features

Passives

  • Relentless (2)

This adversary can be spotlighted up to 2 times per GM turn. Spend Fear as usual to spotlight them.

  • Burdened by Sloth

The Epitome of Sin can only ever move up to Close range whenever it is spotlighted, but when it takes damage that is dealt from Far range or greater, reduce it by 2d10.

Actions

  • Blinded by Greed
    fear 1

Spend a Fear to attempt to blind a PC within Close range with the sin of greed. The target must make a Presence Reaction Roll. If the target has more than half of their HP marked or is in Very Close range of the Epitome of Sin, the roll is done with disadvantage. On a failure, they become Greedy until they roll a success with Hope. While Greedy, they must stay within Close range of the Epitome of Sin and are Vulnerable. On a success, the target marks 1d4 Stress as they nearly commit a mortal sin.

  • Devoured by Gluttony
    stress 1

Make an attack roll against a target within Close range. On a success, mark a Stress to devour them. The target is Restrained and Vulnerable until they find their way out of the Epitome of Sin with a successful Instinct Roll or the Epitome of Sin takes Major or greater damage. While Restrained and Vulnerable in this way, a target must mark a Stress when they make an action roll.

  • Succumbed to Lust
    fear 1

Spend a Fear to attempt to succumb a PC within Far range with the sin of lust. The target must make a Presence Reaction Roll. On a failure, they become Lustful until they roll a success with Hope or are within Melee range of the Epitome of Sin. While Lustful, they must move up to Far range towards the Epitome of Sin whenever they take the spotlight. On a success, the target marks 1d4 Stress as they nearly commit a mortal sin.

Reactions

  • Shaped by Envy
    fear 1

When a PC uses an Experience within Far range of the Epitome of Sin, you can spend a Fear to attempt to take that Experience from them. The target must make a Knowledge Reaction Roll. On a failure, the target loses that Experience until the Epitome of Sin is defeated or takes Severe damage, and the Epitome of Sin gains that Experience for itself. On a success, the target marks 1d4 Stress as part of their identity is nearly stripped away.

  • Fueled by Wrath
    stress 1

When the Epitome of Sin takes Severe damage or makes a standard attack, you can mark a Stress to have the Epitome of Sin lash out, making the attack against all targets within Close range. If the Epitome of Sin is at 7 HP or less, the range of its standard attack is increased to Far.

  • Filled with Pride
    fear 7

The first time in a scene when the Epitome of Sin would mark its last HP, you can spend up to 7 Fear. For each Fear you spend, the Epitome of Sin clears HP and Stress equal to the Fear spent and is then immediately spotlighted.

  • Momentum

When the Epitome of Sin makes a successful attack against a PC, you gain a Fear.
