Exploring the Tower uses a Progress Countdown (4). The Countdown ticks down every time the PCs decipher a Distorted Echo of the Tower's downfall. When the Countdown triggers, the truth at the center of the tragedy is revealed and the party is confronted with the demonic force behind the phenomenon (See Corruption At The Root).

    Questions
    • How does the influence of the Demons manifest itself in the environment?

Actions

action
  • Distorted Echoes

Inhabitants can be found locked in torturous echoing loops of significant events or conflicts pertaining to the fall of the Tower influenced by either Hubris, Avarice, Despair, Jealousy, or Wrath. Show how the demonic domains define the knot of the Echo and allow for the PCs to complete the scene by interpreting your narration. The tongue curse of the Everfall Tower twists understanding between the inhabitants, further sowing the seed of conflict.
The PCs must attempt to understand the Echoes and resolve them, in order to free the inhabitants and unravel the mystery of the collapse.

The Echoes and how they pertain to the demonic domains could be:
    - A successful merchant hoarding reassources, when others starve (Avarice)
    - A spiritual sage, whose prophecies of the Tower's demise, fall on deaf ears (Despair)
    - An envious scholar murdering their colleague over academic acclaim (Jealousy)
    - Disenfranchised youths causing destruction and being hailed as visionary artists (Wrath)
    - Hubris' Echo could be the Everfall Tower itself, creating a playground for the rest of the Demons to indulge in their domains.

    Questions
    • How do you interpret what's happening in the loop? How do you attempt to resolve it?
  • Scrambled Speech

Spend a Fear to attempt to curse a PC. They must make a Knowledge Reaction Roll or lose the ability to understand all speech, writing and other forms of communication. Use sparingly and be open to the PCs finding ways to lift the curse in creative ways.

    Questions
    • Now that you can't understand your friends anymore, do you also begin to feel the creeping doubt? What could they be saying about you?
  • Collapsing Architecture

Pick a point within the Tower. All targets within Close range of that point must succeed on an Agility Reaction Roll or take 2d10+4 physical damage and become Restrained by the fallen debris until they are freed with a successful Strength roll or by dealing at least 10 damage to the fallen debris.

    Questions
    • What kind of debris falls on you? What does it reveal about the construction of the Tower?

Reactions

  • Corruption At The Root

As the Progress Countdown triggers, the party's presence in, investigation of, and interference with the Tower finally puts them face to face with the corrupting influence at the center: The quintet Demons of Hubris, Avarice, Despair, Jealousy, and Wrath.
Hubris' Echo is the Everfall Tower itself, creating a playground for the rest of the Demons to play out their domains.

This encounter corresponds to 12 Battle Points, so feel free to remove Demons for a smaller party or add Minions or Hordes for a larger one.

    Questions
    • At the end of the encounter, how will the fate of the Tower be decided? Will the PCs actions help reconstruct the Tower, continue the cycle, or allow it to finally fall to ruin?

About this environment

A devious curse seems to scramble the speech of the denizens of the Everfall Tower, enflaming agonizing conflicts between them. What mystical corruption at the heart of the Tower has caused the phenomenon?
