Bogeyman

Adversaries Designed by Lobotomized Dragon • Art by Paizo Publishing

Adversary overview

Terrifying fey that devours innocence and souls. Typically hunts while hidden, methodically stalking and tormenting its prey.

Few targets who survive an encounter with him remain unchanged. Depending on the culture, different names are given to this creature, such as Bogeyman or Bugaboo. It is unknown exactly where he came from. If superstitious storytellers are to be believed, then this creature was once a human kidnapped by a fey. According to these stories, the victim disappeared for years before returning as the Bogeyman to the town he once called home.

The Bogeyman delights in instilling fear in small communities where gossip can quickly amplify. In such places, he exploits people’s natural tendency to spread misinformation to sow discord and avoid notice – for who would rightfully believe that an actual Bogeyman is behind the latest murder?

This nocturnal stalker tails his chosen quarry for days or even weeks at a time, ominously showing up in back alleys, dark street corners, and even in victims’ own homes before going for the kill.

Features

Passives

  • Relentless (3)

The Bogeyman can be spotlighted up to three times per GM turn. Spend Fear as usual to spotlight them.

  • Battle Teleport

Before or after making a standard attack, the Bogeyman can mark a Stress to teleport to a location within Far range.

  • Invisible

The Bogeyman becomes Invisible. Place three tokens on this statblock. Each time the Bogeyman takes an action or PC attacks him and succeeds, remove a token. When the last token is removed, the Bogeyman becomes visible. Spend a Fear to make him Invisible again.

Actions

  • Deepest Fear

The Bogeyman can mark X Stress to trap targets within Close range in a powerful illusion of their deepest fears, where X equals the number of targets to be affected. Creatures in range must make an Instinct Reaction Roll or become trapped. While trapped, the target is Restrained and Vulnerable until they break free, ending both conditions, with a successful Instinct Roll. The target also breaks free if they mark any HP.

Reactions

  • Devour Soul

If the Bogeyman succeeds on a standard attack against a target that is affected by the Deepest Fear action, the target loses a Hope and the Bogeyman clears an HP or a Stress. If the target can’t lose a Hope, they must mark an HP.

  • Terrifying Momentum

When the Bogeyman makes a successful attack against a PC, the target loses a Hope and you gain a Fear.
