Sky Eater

Adversaries Designed by Dandelev • Art by Dandelev

Adversary overview

Massive sinuous creatures with color-changing scales that leave trails across the sky as they feast on clouds

Large flying creatures with sinuous bodies who snake through the skies in search of tasty clouds. They nest in rocky crevices and mountain caves at high altitudes. Sky eaters have color-changing scales that allow them to blend in with the colors of early dawn, dark sunset, or stormy days, making them difficult to spot. However, the long tears in clouds they leave behind while feasting are a clear giveaway that a sky eater is about. While their diet is is strictly stratospheric and they can’t digest dense matter, sky eaters are fiercely territorial and may attack adventurers who wander or fly too high.

Actions

  • Cloud Breath

The sky eater releases an explosive gust of air and cloud matter from its jaws as it targets one to three PCs in Close range. Any PCs who aren't grounded (i.e. they are flying or climbing) must make a Difficulty 16 Strength or Agility reaction roll to avoid being blown up to Far range away from the sky eater.

  • Celestial Camouflage
    fear 1

Spend a Fear for the sky eater’s scales to take on the colors and hues of the surrounding environment. Players must pass a Difficulty 15 Insight Check or use a relevant ability to spot the sky eater while it is camouflaged. While camouflaged, the sky eater cannot be targeted and attacks made against it are done at disadvantage. Camouflage lasts until the sky eater makes an attack or enters Very Close range of a PC.

  • Stratus Strategy
    fear 1

The sky eater positions itself above a potential threat. It then dives, using its large body and surrounding channels of wind to smash into sky ships, objects, or characters in a vicious attempt to knock them out of the sky. Damage dealt on a successful hit is determined by the range the sky eater dove from (Melee = 1d12, Very Close = 1d20, Close = 2d20, Far = 3d20). This damage applies to the first object it intercepts. Any surrounding creatures or objects within Very Close range also take half damage.
