Environment overview

“The crows sing. The fields remember. With every rustle of the stalks, every whispered secret, I feed. Come now. Let the stalks say your name. Let the crows sing your story. I’ll harvest what you hide.”

Potential adversaries

Corvodaemon The Harvest Terror

Features

Passives

passive
  • Impenetrable Boundary

The Fields of the Crow is a hellish corn maze. Trying to push through or damage the stalks causes the wind to howl and the stalks to thrash at the intruder. The stalks cannot take damage (immune). If the intruder is within Melee range of the stalks, they are pushed back to Very Close range away and must succeed on a DC 13 Strength reaction roll, taking (3d6) PHY damage on a failed save or half as much damage on a successful one.

  • Infinite Stalks

The corn stalks are so tall that they seemingly extend forever. Because of this, every time a flying creature reaches Far Range above the ground, they are suddenly Close Range above the ground. They must Mark a Stress as the effort is too much.

    Questions
    • How does this shift change the PCs' perception of this field?
  • Impending Doom

The PCs feel their sense of self slowly slipping away. After three hours, the characters’ souls are ripped from their bodies, condemned to wander the Fields of the Crow for eternity. Their bodies transform into scarecrows, forever trapped in Foxwillow. Begin a Countdown of 1d6 to track this progress.

    Questions
    • What do you feel when in the presence of the Stalks?
    • Who, or what is pulling at you, deep within?

Actions

action
  • Blood Rain
    Fear 1

A massive storm suddenly arises. Blood rains down in sheets, the thick liquid blinding and stinging eyes. The air becomes heavy and hot, and the stinking smell of copper becomes suffocatingly thick. Each character must succeed on a DC 15 Strength reaction roll. On a failure, the target must Mark a Stress.

  • Body of Crops
    Fear 1

Spend a Fear. The corpses of people Raum has killed have not yet returned as scarecrows form a nauseating crop circle in the middle of this clearing. Corn sprouts from the corpses in various states of decay—stalks rip out of chest cavities, biceps, and even mangled faces with lifeless, staring eyes. Choose twelve spaces in this Junction to place these corpses when the characters first enter it. A character who comes within 5 feet of a gruesome corpse or starts its turn within 5 feet of one must succeed on a DC 13 Knowledge reaction roll or Mark a Stress from horror and disgust.

    Questions
    • What about these grotesque corpses reaches the very bowels of your psyche?
  • Disorienting Crowsong
    Fear 1

Spend a Fear to bring out a murder of crows circling above, their song becoming a disorienting cacophony. Before any PC can act while in this Junction, roll 1d6 and subtract the number rolled from their attack rolls and reaction rolls. Anyone who paid a secret hears Raum taunting them about it in the crow song and must roll 1d10 instead.

    Questions
    • Why does the song of the crows impact you so much?
  • Shadows of the Lost
    Fear 1

Spend a Fear. Shadowy, insubstantial figures rise out of the ground in this Junction—screaming images of all the people that The Harvest Terror spirited away into the Fields of the Crow. Before the PC takes any action, they must succeed on a DC 13 Knowledge Reaction Roll or Mark a Stress. Those who have paid a secret to enter the maze have Disadvantage on this reaction roll.

About this environment

This will be used in my conversion of the 5e adventure from Legends of Avantris, “The Crooked Moon”. This will be used for Chapter: Fields of the Crow, when the PCs are interacting with the “final” area.
