Subclasses

About these subclasses

Soul Reapers train in both blade and kido rather than mastering one at the expense of the other, and most fall somewhere on a spectrum between the two rather than committing fully to either. This subclass represents that middle ground: a Soul Reaper who’s competent across the board, with a natural lean toward the sword or toward kido depending on their training and temperament, but never locked out of the other. At the table, this plays as a flexible, adaptable character who can respond to whatever a fight calls for, rather than one built around a single signature move.

Blade-Leaning Officer

Spellcast Trait: Instinct

A swordsman who knows enough kido to get by.

Foundation

Dual Discipline: You can use both Zanjutsu Techniques and Kido cards, but your zanpakuto strikes hit harder. When you deal damage with your zanpakuto, add extra damage equal to half your level.

Specialization

Kido on the Fly: Once per rest, cast a Kido card as a reaction to being attacked, without needing to have it in your active loadout.

Mastery

Balanced Blade: Once per rest, after casting a Kido card, your next zanpakuto strike this turn automatically succeeds.

Kido-Leaning Officer

Spellcast Trait: Instinct

A caster who can still hold their own with a blade.

Foundation

Dual Discipline: You can use both Zanjutsu Techniques and Kido cards, but your Kido hits harder. When you deal damage with a Kido card, add extra damage equal to half your level.

Specialization

Blade on Reserve: Once per rest, make a free zanpakuto attack as a reaction when an enemy moves within Melee range of you.

Mastery

Balanced Caster: Once per rest, after landing a zanpakuto strike, your next Kido card this turn costs no Stress.
