Warden of Souls

About these subclasses

I like druids, but my very personal quirk is that shapeshifting into animals has never been my Druid class fantasy. Warden of Souls remixes the Beastform feature, allowing you to summon ethereal versions of animals instead of transforming into them. The benefits of the foundation feature are subtle: members of this warden can leverage being in two places at once, using spells and weapons alongside beastform abilities, and using their spirit beasts to safely scout dangerous areas.

Also, as it turns out, “You summon a beast instead of turning into it” is very simple to describe, but very difficult to write proper rules text for! I wound up realizing that “treat the spirit beast as though it was yourself in beastform” captures 99% of what you need in terms of mechanics. Evasion, damage thresholds, marking HP/Stress: the spirit beast *is* the druid, plain and simple.

Warden of Souls

Spellcast Trait: Instinct

Play the Warden of Souls if you want to conjure spirit beasts to fight alongside you.

Foundation

Spirit Beast: When you use Beastform, rather than transforming into a creature, you splinter your soul to summon a spirit copy of that Beastform. Treat the Spirit Beast as though it was yourself in Beastform. When you drop out of Beastform, it dissipates. If an effect would target both of you simultaneously, it instead targets only one of you (you choose). You can still cast spells and use weapons while you have an active spirit beast, but you can only have one spirit beast active at a time.

Specialization

Resonance: You can replace any trait listed on your Beastform with your spellcast trait.

Faithful Allies: You can summon a Spirit Beast after a rest without marking a Stress.

Mastery

Act as One: You can initiate a tag team roll with your spirit beast at the cost of 1 Hope. When you do, roll a d20 as both of your Hope die.
