About this product

A new campaign frame of defiant fantasy from one of Daggerheart's designers!

Dragons and Necromancers rule the world with sorcery and spite. They loom over bustling cities and use precarity to keep workers hungry and desperate.

Now, after centuries, one nation has shattered the towers and slain their draconic overlord. In the newly-free country of Bastion, a defiant few stoke the flames of revolution. In a Bastion of Hope campaign, you’ll face impossible odds as you fight to end the age of tyrants. This original campaign frame provides everything needed to play using the Daggerheart rules, including:

  1. Custom rules for divine boons
  2. Printable equipment cards for setting-unique gear
  3. A region map with tools to customize the setting

This is too good and I am jealous beyond words.

Reading through this campaign frame felt genuinely inspiring. It's concise and well put together, both in terms of content and layout design. The concept art style is very fitting in how it mirrors the campaign frame, giving you exactly the right amount of structure and content to let your imagination run wild without filling in every last detail. The greatest strength of this campaign frame is its very clear concept, and how it ensures characters are tied directly into it from the start. There are also a number of small touches, like how GMs might handle players attempting to bring down the magic-stealing obelisks, or Chainbreaker Boons, or Innate Magic. Don't expect pages of information, but what is there shows a level of care and detail in a product that could've been easily missed. Each of the five rival nations gets a single tight page of information, and there aren't many named NPCs beyond the rulers and the senior Chainbreakers. I actually count that as a plus, because the broad strokes are painted clearly enough that I have plenty of room to build out the details myself rather than working around an established cast. The same goes for equipment and the Chainbreaker Boons. There isn't a lot of it, but what's there is well-made and fits cleanly into the existing Daggerheart system. Where this frame really earns its keep is in how the setting comes together. Dragons and Necromancers as rival overlords is a great twist on the usual tyrant fantasy. It gives you options both as a GM and Player, and the inciting incident is a good showcase of the tone. You're not just fighting through every obstacle, you need to work with one of the neighbouring nations. It backs up the "fight smart, not fair" principle with an actual example right out of the gate, rather than just stating it once and moving on. I'm genuinely impressed by Mike Underwood's work here, and this is certainly going on my short list for the next campaign I'm running. As a note, this review is based on my own read-through. I have not run a campaign using the Bastion of Hope frame at this time. However, I have been running a weekly Daggerheart campaign in a homebrew setting for over 20+ sessions.

An excellent work of "escapist fiction"! Mike's senses of both design and justice are all over the pages of this frame. Shaun Ellis's art is beautiful as always, especially the full-spread pieces for each country. The Chainbreaker Boons are my favorite unique mechanic the frame introduces, empowering each PC based on their most prominent virtue. Stoked to see more of this world!

A great campaign frame with beautiful artwork. A fun totally-not-slaying-billionaires story with a side order of Magitek.
