About this ancestry

The Ascarii are a species shaped by evolutionary necessity into competitive warriors. Their most distinctive feature is the bony bioluminescent ridge that extends from their temples past their ears, glowing with an inner light that reveals their status at a glance. This isn't mere decoration - it's the physical manifestation of Krath, a hormone released when they achieve victory through combat, competition, or cunning.

Biology and Development

Ascarii pass through four life stages:

-Juveniles (0-16) are cooperative and calm, their temple bumps barely visible.

-The Unlit (16-21+) undergo a violent second puberty where their competitive drive awakens. Desperate for victories to trigger Krath production, they're dangerous, impulsive, and driven to prove themselves. Many don't survive this phase.

-The Kindled have proven themselves through victories, their ridges glowing with steady candlelight. They're officers, mercenaries, and skilled warriors who've earned their status through triumph.

-The Crowned blaze with bright, steady light. These elders emit pheromones that help calm younger Ascarii, making them natural leaders and diplomats.

Culture

"Follow the light, or become it" is their central philosophy. Success is visible - your ridge cannot lie about your accomplishments. This creates a society of mercenaries, raiders, and merchants who view competition not as vice but as necessary biology. They make fierce allies and honorable enemies, but their need for victory makes them perpetually dangerous.

Other cultures trade with Ascarii Crowned (stable, trustworthy) while watching Unlit warbands warily. The species knows what they are - dangerous by nature - and tries to channel that violence productively through mercenary work and sanctioned competitions. But biology demands victory, and sometimes that means taking from others.
