About this class
Necromancers are mages who wield power over life and death itself. They can mend flesh and bone, wither foes with corrupting magic, and reanimate the dead to serve their will. Feared and misunderstood, necromancers are often outlawed in civilized lands and many of them conceal their craft or retreat to the fringes of society to avoid scrutiny.
Their motivations vary; some seek forbidden knowledge buried with the dead, others crave an army of obedient undead. Regardless of their goals, necromancers share a common creed: no truth is too dark, no magic too profane. To them, death is not an end, but a doorway to ultimate understanding.
This is my second attempt at a necromancer, trying to move away from the Ranger chassis and have it be its own thing. I definitely took a lot of inspiration from LedoMovuct’s necromancer (though, to be fair, I helped create that one) as well as Joseph Cittadino’s necromancer. Both of these are great and you should check them out.
This class has a lot of tokens. Like, a LOT. That’s kinda the point. This is the token class. Acquiring, distributing, and otherwise managing the tokens seemed like it would be fun. This hasn’t been playtested though, so I could be dead wrong. Pun intended.

Necrotic Essence
When a creature dies within Far range of you, place a token on your character sheet. You can also mark a Stress or give the GM a Fear to place a token on your character sheet. You can have a maximum number of tokens on your sheet equal to your Spellcast trait. As long as you have at least one token, you can sense the presence of corpses and undead creatures within Close range. Spend a token to do the following:
- Speak with the Dead: once per rest, spend a token to ask a corpse a question. They tell the truth but they can only share what they knew in life and their answers can be cryptic or misleading. Creatures killed by you or your party members refuse to speak to you.
- Raise the Dead: spend a token and place it on your subclass card to summon an undead creature within Close range. The type of undead creature is determined by your subclass. Make a Spellcast Roll to command it, using the result to determine the outcome.
Class items
- A bone talisman or a book of rituals you are trying to decipher.
Character questions
Background prompts
- How did you discover you could raise the dead? Who was the first corpse you raised?
- What knowledge are you seeking that you believe the dead can reveal to you?
- What steps have you taken to hide your activities? What have you had to do to avoid or silence onlookers?
Connection prompts
- Why do you trust me, knowing what I can do?
- What question do you have for someone who has died that I promised I would help you find the answer to?
- What skill are you helping me improve on?

SPELLCAST TRAIT: Knowledge
Undead Servant: Place a spent Necrotic Essence token on this card to summon or bolster an undead servant. You can only have one servant at a time and you can have an amount of tokens on this card equal to your Spellcast trait. The undead servant has an Evasion score equal to 10 plus the amount of tokens on this card. Each time it is successfully attacked, remove a token. Once you remove the last token, the servant is destroyed. Its attacks have a range of Melee and deal physical damage equal to d8+your level+the number of tokens on this card, using your Proficiency.
Death Diviner
Specialization
Grave Speaker: You can use your "Speak with the Dead" feature any number of times and you do not need a corpse but can speak with spirits in any area with a strong connection to the afterlife.
Modify Servant: Move a Necrotic Essence token to this card to alter your undead servant in the following ways:
Increase its attack range by one step, up to Very Far
Change its damage type to magic
Increase its damage die size by one, up to a d12
When the servant is destroyed, clear all tokens.
Death Diviner
Mastery
Specter: Mark any number of Stress and place an equal amount of tokens on this card. While tokens remain on this card, your undead servant is a ghost. They can fly and each successful attack they make also forces the target to mark a Stress. Spend a token to have the servant pass through a solid object, negate an instance of physical damage, or give you a brief glimpse into the future, allowing you to reroll an action or reaction roll.
Undead Commander
Foundation
SPELLCAST TRAIT: Knowledge
Undead Thralls: Place a spent Necrotic Essence token on this card to summon an undead thrall. You can have a number of thralls equal to your level plus your Spellcast trait. You can command them all together or individually. Your thralls have an Evasion score equal to 8 plus your Spellcast trait and are destroyed if they take any damage. Remove a token each time a thrall is destroyed. They have an attack range of Melee and each deal physical damage equal to your Spellcast trait. Make a Spellcast Roll to have all your thralls within Close range of a target move into Melee range and make a group attack, combining their damage on a success.
Undead Commander
Specialization
Meat Shields: When a creature within Melee range of a thrall would be successfully attacked, mark a Stress to have the thrall be the target of the attack instead.
Efficient Essence: Each Necrotic Essence token spent to summon a thrall summons two thralls instead. Place two tokens on your foundation card for each token spent.
Undead Commander
Mastery
Golem: Once per long rest, move all the tokens from your foundation card to this card to amalgamate all your thralls into a single grotesque monstrosity. Its attack range increases to Very Close and its damage becomes d20+10 physical using your Proficiency. Creatures within Very Close range of the Golem can benefit from your "Meat Shields" feature. Each time the Golem is successfully attacked or makes a successful action roll, remove a token from this card. Once all tokens are removed, the Golem is destroyed.
