Ensnarer

About these subclasses

Rangers are known for setting up traps in the wild, so this subclass captures that fantasy introducing traps that a Ranger can set up against their Ranger’s Focus. The description and setup of this trap is retroactive, much like flashbacks in Blades in the Dark.

Ensnarer

Spellcast Trait: Finesse

Play the Ensnarer if you want to set up traps that can afflict debilitating effects on your foes.

Foundation

Trap Setup: Whenever your Focus moves, you can spend a Hope to force them to make a Reaction Roll with a Difficulty equal to 12 + your tier. On a failure, describe a trap you set up earlier that causes the target to be temporarily Restrained and Vulnerable.

Specialization

Specialized Traps: When your Focus fails their Reaction Roll from your Trap Setup feature, you can mark a Stress to inflict one of the following effects on your Focus:

  • Damage: The target takes 4d4+4 physical damage.
  • Poison: The target becomes temporarily Poisoned. A Poisoned creature takes 1d10 physical damage each time they act.
  • Stagger: The target becomes temporarily Staggered. A Staggered creature has disadvantage on attack rolls they make.
Mastery

Trap Master: The GM must spend 2 Fear instead of 1 to end the Restrained and/or Vulnerable conditions on an adversary affected by your Trap Setup feature. Additionally, you no longer need to mark a Stress to inflict an additional effect using your Specialized Traps feature.
