Death Diviner • Undead Commander

About these subclasses

Subclasses for the Necromancer v2. The Death Diviner harkens back to the old necromancers of myth, raising a single undead minions to glean knowledge and divine the future. The Undead Commander is the leader of an army of undead, weaker individually, but a force to be reckoned with when fighting together.

Death Diviner

Spellcast Trait: Knowledge

Play the Death Diviner if you want to use your connection with the dead to expand your knowledge and predict the future.

Foundation

Undead Servant: Place a spent Necrotic Essence token on this card to summon or bolster an undead servant. You can only have one servant at a time and you can have an amount of tokens on this card equal to your Spellcast trait. The undead servant has an Evasion score equal to 10 plus the amount of tokens on this card. Each time it is successfully attacked, remove a token. Once you remove the last token, the servant is destroyed. Its attacks have a range of Melee and deal physical damage equal to d8+your level+the number of tokens on this card, using your Proficiency.

Specialization

Grave Speaker: You can use your "Speak with the Dead" feature any number of times and you do not need a corpse but can speak with spirits in any area with a strong connection to the afterlife.

Modify Servant: Move a Necrotic Essence token to this card to alter your undead servant in the following ways:

  • Increase its attack range by one step, up to Very Far

  • Change its damage type to magic

  • Increase its damage die size by one, up to a d12

When the servant is destroyed, clear all tokens.

Mastery

Specter: Mark any number of Stress and place an equal amount of tokens on this card. While tokens remain on this card, your undead servant is a ghost. They can fly and each successful attack they make also forces the target to mark a Stress. Spend a token to have the servant pass through a solid object, negate an instance of physical damage, or give you a brief glimpse into the future, allowing you to reroll an action or reaction roll.

Undead Commander

Spellcast Trait: Knowledge

Play an Undead Commander if you want to lead an army of undead minions.

Foundation

Undead Thralls: Place a spent Necrotic Essence token on this card to summon an undead thrall. You can have a number of thralls equal to your level plus your Spellcast trait. You can command them all together or individually. Your thralls have an Evasion score equal to 8 plus your Spellcast trait and are destroyed if they take any damage. Remove a token each time a thrall is destroyed. They have an attack range of Melee and each deal physical damage equal to your Spellcast trait. Make a Spellcast Roll to have all your thralls within Close range of a target move into Melee range and make a group attack, combining their damage on a success.

Specialization

Meat Shields: When a creature within Melee range of a thrall would be successfully attacked, mark a Stress to have the thrall be the target of the attack instead.

Efficient Essence: Each Necrotic Essence token spent to summon a thrall summons two thralls instead. Place two tokens on your foundation card for each token spent.

Mastery

Golem: Once per long rest, move all the tokens from your foundation card to this card to amalgamate all your thralls into a single grotesque monstrosity. Its attack range increases to Very Close and its damage becomes d20+10 physical using your Proficiency. Creatures within Very Close range of the Golem can benefit from your "Meat Shields" feature. Each time the Golem is successfully attacked or makes a successful action roll, remove a token from this card. Once all tokens are removed, the Golem is destroyed.
